Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal was a kind of rock music that evolved in the 70’s.Bands that helped in creating this genre are Black Sabbath,Iron Maiden,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple etc.In the 70’s a music movement called as NWOBHM[New Wave Of British Heavy Metal] started and was popularized by bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest fusing punk with heavy metal.

Heavy metal is charachterised by its loud nature,aggressive guitaring where the guitars are played in dirty mode [using distortion],gruff vocal style[although not necessary as some bands feature opera type vocals].a lead guitar,bassist and a drummer and sometimes a keyboardist.The themes in heavy metal include fantasy related,nihilism, personal feelings,war,violence in societies, social problems,etc.Heavy meal fans are called as Metalheads and are very devoted to their music.

Usually instrumental prowess is displayed like the guitar solos and intricate melodies.Heavy metal also has intense drumming compared to rock music.The playing style is also different with more emphasis on the stattaco or palm muted riffs.

Heavy Metal also has a subculture of its own.Heavy Metal has further given rise to Thrash Metal,Progressive Metal,Nu metal,Groove Metal,Death Metal,Black Metal etc.Notable bands include Black Sabbath,Iron Maiden,Judas Priest,Led Zeppelin[proto metal].
